Strings are a crucial component of a tennis racquet. Without them, you would not be able to hit the ball! What's more, tennis is a game of precise accuracy, where a point or two can decide the outcome of a match. To win a point in a closely fought contest, you need pinpoint accuracy, which depends significantly on your racquet stringing.

Such is the desire for accuracy and consistency that some professional players pay a premium to have a tailored stringing service all year round. Roger Federer, for instance, is on a package with Priority One - a notable firm providing racquet services - that costs USD 40,000 annually. Priority One's Ron Yu has strung Federer's racquets personally for the past 15 years.

Best Stringing Tension for Tennis Racquets

String tension is a crucial factor when you restring a racquet, and it can define the outcome of a match. If the tension is too low, the balls will likely tend to go out, and if it is too high, it could affect your power. ATP Tour players like Nadal, Djokovic, and Federer have their racquets strung between a range of 55 pounds to 60 pounds of tension.

Now you might ask how tension in the string relates to the effect on the ball? Well, it's pretty simple. A lower tension will give you more power, and higher tension will give you more control.

Therefore, beginners who often lack a good feel and power on their groundstrokes would be better off with a low string tension ranging from 40 to 50 lbs. More experienced players, especially those with a powerful forehand or backhand, tend to worry more about their ball landing in the opposite half of the court. In other words, they want more control over their shots. Control can be achieved by a high string tension, which is anything between 50 and 60 lbs.

Something important to note: After prolonged use, tennis racquets stringbed will lose tension which will affect the way you execute strokes, so make sure that if something like this happens, you rectify this by restringing your racket.

How to Restring a Tennis Racket

Equipment and Tools required: You will need a racquet Stringing machine to string a racket. Clippers, pliers, starting clamps, and awls are the most common tools you will need to restring a tennis racquet.

The first step here is to know how much string you need. For the mains, you would have to look at your string pattern. For example, if it's 18 × 20, you would have to pull the string 18 times the length of the racquet head plus one more time to have enough string left to apply tension on the last string of the mains so that you won't have any issues tying the knots.

For the crosses, you will need string enough for 20 times plus one more time the width of the racket head to have enough string to tie the knot on the crosses.

How Long does it take to String a Tennis Racket?

It usually takes around 30 minutes to string a tennis racquet with care and precision. However, you can improve on your stringing time without compromising on quality. Professional stringers can restring a tennis racket in just 15 minutes, sometimes even less!

How Often should I Restring my Racket?

This varies with how frequently you play, your play style, and the type of strings you play with.

Players typically follow a rule of thumb to know how often to restring their rackets. The average number of times you play in a week is the number of times you should rest your racket in a year.

At Racquet Point, we recommend club players to have their tennis racket stringing service at least every three months for peak performance.

How Long do Tennis Strings Last?

Again, this depends on how frequently you play and the type/quality of the strings you use. If you're a tennis player that hits with lots of topspin, the life span of the string will be shorter.

Having said that, stay on the safe side and replace your strings before they break.

If you are a player who relies on greater control to stay competitive, you might notice after some time that your shots are starting to lose accuracy, leading you to make more errors. This is due to a tension loss and signals that you must change your strings.

The amount of topspin you generate on each groundstroke can also tell you much about your strings/tension. It is time to replace your strings if you feel you have to swing considerably faster and harder to generate the same topspin as when the racket was freshly strung.

At Racquet Point, we offer the best brands of tennis strings that will suit all tennis players' styles, from soft to hard hitters and from flat hitters to extreme topspin hitters.
