The 2024 WTA Wuhan tennis tournament, one of the biggest events on the WTA Tour in the post-US Open schedule, will be running this week. The tournament is also known as the Dongfeng Voyah in China or the Wuhan Open. The main draw action has already started, with several matches completed on Monday, October 7th. It is all building up to a Sunday, October 13th final, one that could have a US Open rematch in it. Here's a rundown of what happened in Wuhan on Monday with a quick look at some of the matches to follow.

Monday Results: Diana Shnaider Eliminated from the 2024 Wuhan Open

There was a casualty among the seeded players on Monday. Canada's Leylah Fernandez knocked out Diana Shnaider in a three-set match. Shnaider was the No. 12 seed, meaning that Fernandez will take over that seed's perspective on the draw. She will avoid a seeded player in the next round, where Fernandez will face either Karolina Muchova or Moyuka Uchijima.

The other seeded players that were active on Monday advanced. Tenth-seeded Anna Kalinskaya, Jannik Sinner's girlfriend, marched past Anna Bondar 6-1, 6-3. Donna Vekic dropped a set to Elise Mertens but the Croat advanced 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. In one of the bigger matches from the opening day the No. 9 seed, Beatriz Haddad Maia, eliminated American Madison Keys 7-6, 6-2.

Americans went 2-3 on Monday at the 2024 Wuhan Open

There were four other Americans active on Monday. Caroline Dolehide is out of the event at the hands of Xinyu Wang. Katie Volynets also lost on Monday. Meanwhile, both Hailey Baptiste and Bernarda Pera advanced. Including Keys' result, American women went 2-3 in the main draw but the power hitters are still to follow.

Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff: Debuting Later This Week

The top eight seeds in the tournament all have byes through the opening round. That includes Aryna Sabalenka, the tournament's No. 1 seed. The Russian joins Americans Emma Navarro, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula as players who will debut in this event when round-of-32 matches start later this week. Gauff is coming off of a title run from last week, meaning tennis fans should be watching for any news coming out of her camp in the days ahead. Other players with a bye include Daria Kasatkina, Qinwen Zheng, Jasmine Paolini, and Barbora Krejcikova.

WTA Wuhan 2024: Tuesday, October 8th Preview

On Tuesday's order of play, Liudmila Samsonova, Mirra Andreeva, Maria Kostyuk, and Paula Badosa are the seeded players scheduled to contest their first-round matches. Americans expected to play in the singles draw on Tuesday are Sofia Kenin, Amanda Anisimova, and Ashlyn Krueger. There are also a host of doubles matches to be played on Tuesday. Unfortunately, anyone looking for match times involving Peyton Stearns should note that she has withdrawn from the event. The draw sheet notes a right foot injury for her.
